The 3.3/3.8 has a DIS. That means there's no distributor or ignition coil. Basically there is a cam and crank sensor. These sensors output voltages which will vary based on the position of the engine. The PCM will then take the voltages and calculate when a spark plug should be fired.
When a spark plug is to be fired, voltage "charges up" in the coil pack and then goes to the spark plug. The ignition pack consists of three coils forged together which sits on the passenger's side of the intake manifold.
The computer may have a knock sensor in order to determine when to set the timing. This has not been fully explored on a 3.3/3.8 car.
