Panelescent Lighting Press Kit

Imperial Home Page -> Imperials by Year -> 1960 -> Panelescent Lighting Press Kit

Electroluminescence was a distinguishing feature of the Imperial in the early 60's. Chrysler called this "Panelescent Lighting" and can be found lighting the instrument panels. It's effect is dramatic; the gauges themselves glow making them seem to float in the instrument cluster. This lighting technology lasted on Imperial through 1963 and can also be found on first generation Dodge Chargers (1966-1967).

This press release introduced Panelescent Lighting on 8 September, 1959. Sylvania Lighting Products was the designer and manufacturer of Panelescent Lighting. One can see similar lighting on modern Lexus automobiles. Really ahead of it's time!
